Draw your own conclusions
Moving your hand is maybe the smartest way to move your mind
Recently, a post from Helios Movement sparked an interesting conversation, one which I go on about a lot: your brain works better when your body is involved.
For creative young people who already draw, sketch, build, and make things constantly - this is important.
Your Brain Loves Movement
When you physically draw a diagram, sketch a character, write notes by hand, or build a model, your brain isn’t just ‘thinking.’ It’s coordinating muscles, processing shapes and space, making decisions alongside correcting mistakes, ultimately leading to strengthening memory pathways
That physical action tells your brain - this matters - keep this. Typing into AI or copying information might feel faster, but speed isn’t the same as learning.
Drawing = Thinking
If you sketch, mind map, draw from memory or doodle then you will have experienced when your hand moves, your thoughts slow down just enough to become clearer. You: remember more, understand deeper, notice details quicker, and form your own opinions. AI etc can give you answers, but drawing helps you build your own understanding.
Science consistently shows that writing by hand improves retention, physical activity improves focus and sketching strengthens comprehension. learning isn’t just about brain power - it’s physical. Your brain evolved alongside movement. Sitting passively and receiving information is not how humans originally learned. We learned by making, testing, observing and then developing ideas. It’s what you do when you draw.
If you’re constantly sketching, designing, and building ideas visually - you’re training your brain in a powerful way.
You’re not just ‘being artistic’. You are developing critical thinking, patience and deep focus. AI is a tool. Like a calcluator, or a search engine. It can give starting points or offer inspiration, however it does the thinking for you, your brain doesn’t grow as much. The question is: Are you using the tool - or is the tool using you?
If you sketch first, think first, struggle first, and then check your ideas - you stay in control.
When you draw, build, or physically map ideas, you are doing something ancient and intuitive. You strengthen your memory and form original thoughts. You train your attention and become mentally resilient
That’s not old-fashioned or outdated - it’s intelligent
Thanks so much for reading - last week I was down with the lurgy - but back again, and I’ll see you next week! 😊
