Thinking Sideways
Original ideas rarely follow straight lines
It’s fair to ask whether lateral thinking - the ability to approach problems from unexpected angles - is becoming something beyond our ken. Lateral thinking isn’t about replacing logic, but about stepping outside of it to generate fresh, unconventional ideas. For young creatives, it may be more crucial now than ever.
Modern education and early career environments often reward speed, accuracy, and conformity. There’s usually a ‘right answer,’ and success comes from remembering it quickly. While this might build some memory skills, it can unintentionally discourage experimentation and risk-taking - two core ingredients of lateral thinking. Young people are scared to step outside their social norms. The way they interact with each other online drives a deep need not to be singled out.
Digital tools also play a role. When answers are instantly searchable, the incentive to explore unusual solutions weakens. Why struggle with a problem creatively when a direct solution is a click away?
The result isn’t that lateral thinking has disappeared - it’s that it’s underused.
For young creatives - whether in design, writing, music, or entrepreneurship - lateral thinking is a competitive advantage. It fuels originality. In saturated job markets, technical skill alone rarely stands out. What makes work memorable is a surprising twist, a fresh perspective, or an unusual reinterpretation.
“lateral thinking isn’t about replacing logic, but about stepping outside of it to generate fresh, unconventional ideas. For young creatives, it may be more crucial now than ever.”
Creative careers rarely follow linear paths. Lateral thinking helps individuals reframe setbacks, adapt ideas, and uncover opportunities others might miss.
It builds adaptability. Industries evolve rapidly and those who can think flexibly are better equipped to navigate change and reinvent themselves.
Without lateral thinking, creativity risks becoming formulaic - technically competent, but predictable.
How to Strengthen Lateral Thinking
The good news: lateral thinking isn’t an innate talent reserved for only a few - it’s a skill that can be developed.
1. Challenge Assumptions
Take a familiar idea and question its basic rules. What if the opposite were true? What if a constraint didn’t exist? This simple exercise forces the brain out of habitual patterns.
2. Use Random Stimuli
Introduce an unrelated word, image, or concept into your thinking process. For example, if you’re designing a product, ask: ‘What would this look like if inspired by a forest?’ The randomness sparks unexpected connections.
3. Embrace Constraints
Paradoxically, limits can enhance creativity. Restricting time, materials, or format forces you to think differently rather than rely on default solutions.
4. Practise across a range of thinking
Instead of aiming for one correct answer, generate as many ideas as possible - especially the impractical ones. Quantity often leads to quality through surprising combinations.
5. Step Outside Your Discipline
Exposure to different fields - art, science, philosophy - broadens your mental toolkit. Many breakthrough ideas come from crossing between fields.
6. Get Comfortable with ‘Wrong’ Ideas
Lateral thinking involves risk. Not every idea will work, and that’s the point. Treat failed ideas as stepping stones rather than dead ends.
Lateral thinking isn’t obsolete - it’s just overshadowed. In fact, as artificial intelligence and automation becomes pushed to be relied on - albeit for linear, logical responses - by many, the ability to think laterally becomes more valuable.
For young creatives, the challenge isn’t just to learn skills, but to think differently. Those who become comfortable with lateral thinking won’t just adapt to the future but help decide it.
